Walter Gropius – a “starchitect” of Modernism?
Either or! In 2019 we celebrate 100 years of the Bauhaus School.
The German who revolutionized the world of design.
Say “starchitect” and names, such as Frank Gehry and I. M. Pei come to mind. Around the world, their dramatic office towers, museums and more are must-sees for anyone interested in design. But a century ago, the term could have been coined for Walter Gropius.
Bauhaus: As hip as ever.
Things that were considered avant-garde back then, are part of daily life across North America nowadays. Years before he came to Cambridge Mass. in 1937 to become professor of architecture at Harvard University, Gropius had already begun to revolutionize the idea of design in Germany. Look e.g. at the “Haus am Horn” in the city of Weimar, 3 hours southwest of Berlin: rectangular, white, plain, it could be a home in California. Yet the German house was built nearly a century ago, for the first Bauhaus exhibition back in 1923.

Admire iconic Bauhaus buildings, dine in a Bauhaus-designed restaurant or stay overnight in the 1926 Prellerhaus student dorm in Dessau. Enjoy dreamy parks and buildings in Weimar, and experience the spirit of industrial design in the region around Dessau. Follow the BauhausTrail to understand where this idea of new design came from and what originally inspired the “Bauhaus-Meister”. Make sure to meet with those involved in the movement. Family members of the early Bauhausler, German Bauhaus experts or people who make every effort to ensure that the idea remains pertinent today. The Bauhaus opened in Weimar in 1919, so next year brings the centenary of this inspirational movement. For us, this is reason enough to celebrate the Centenary of Bauhaus! With concerts and festivals all year round. As part of the celebrations, new Bauhaus museums are opening in both Weimar and Dessau-Rosslau. Major exhibitions will offer a wide range of the Bauhaus collection from Breuer and Wagenfeld to Feininger and Van der Rohe. Join workshops and events. Pick a topic! The German states of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, which together are BauhausLand, are waiting for you.
