New Foam-based tire technology significantly reduces interior car noise

Dunlop announces today that it introducing a new technology designed to reduce noise levels inside the vehicle when driving. The technology allows driving enthusiasts to discover more of the roar generated by their sporty engines as overall interior car noise is reduced by up to 4dBA.

The Technology, called “Noise Shield”, tackles interior car noise generated by the Tire Cavity Resonance (TCR). This noise generated by the TCR is the result of the air inside the tire vibrating as it rolls over the road, causing structure-borne noise inside the vehicle. Dunlop’s Noise Shield Technology, with its advanced foam layer inside the tire, helps to reduce this air vibration.

The technology effectively dampens the Tire Cavity Resonance sound peak inside the tire, which is reduced by up to 11dBA, delivering an interior noise reduction of up to 4dB, making the vehicle cabin significantly quieter across a large range of vehicle speeds. Dunlop was asked to deliver the technology by Audi for some its most sporty models, the RS6 and RS7, as well as its new A8.

Because the advanced foam structure formulation is very light, it does not affect the driving performance of the tire, no its speed capabilities. The foam is an integral part of the tire throughout its life without, under normal usage circumstances, losing its capacity to reduce noise levels.
