Based on the most recent research and governmental reports, GreenMatch has found out that the UK ranks 3rd among the other EU member states with a maximum net generating capacity of 13.1 GW.

Current State of the UK's Renewable Energy Sources

The total renewables share of energy generation in the UK was 33% for 2018, which accounts for an increase of 3.8% compared to the previous year. Overall, in 2018 the energy generation has increased across all renewables in the UK compared to the previous year. For example, onshore wind energy generation has increased with 5,2%, offshore wind energy with 27.6%, solar energy with 14.6%, and hydro power - 12%.

An Overview of the UK's Solar Market

Since the launch of the Feed-in Tariff in the UK, there were 992,065 new solar panel installations for the period it was active. Moreover, the UK’s solar market is dominated by small-scale PV systems which comprise more than 90% of the total 1,007,427 installations. However, it is expected that the number of new installations to decrease due to the end of the Feed-in Tariff and the increase of VAT from 1st October.

UK's Solar Prospects for 2023

The UK is on the brink of missing its 2020 EU renewable energy target by 4.8 pp. Contrary to that, it is expected that the total UK solar capacity will increase with 2,711 MW up to 15,674 MW by 2023. That accounts for 4% compound annual solar power growth rate for the next four years.
