IT’S the secret that’s taking the elite sports world by storm. Now for the first time, the Beet It Stamina Shot - the world’s first organic energy drink – is available for cyclists. A scientific report published in the Journal of Applied Physiology revealed drinking beetroot juice could enhance sporting performance by 16percent. James White Drinks supplied the organic beetroot juice used in the trial. MD Lawrence Mallinson, said: “Within days of the research, beetroot juice became an nutritional essential for elite sports professionals from the worlds of cycling, swimming, distance running and rugby. I know this because we supply them directly.” Research, from the University of Exeter, showed the naturally high level of dietary nitrate in beetroot juice increases nitric oxide (NO) in the cardio vascular system, which can enhance oxygen take up and boost stamina. The Beet It Stamina Shot delivers a 25cl boost of beetroot juice – the amount recommended by researchers – in just 7cl. The independent research, headed by leading sports scientist Professor Andy Jones, demonstrated how nitrate turns to nitric oxide in the body leading to a reduction in oxygen uptake. And, in new research, published in this month’s Journal of Applied Physiology, seven healthy men completed a series of knee extension exercises working the quadriceps muscles in the thigh. The level of exertion was assessed using a custom-designed ergometer. An MRI scanner enabled the researchers to record the internal processes of the muscle. In addition, the volunteers’ oxygen uptake was monitored. The exercises were repeated several times over six days both when the volunteers had drunk half a litre of organic beetroot juice a day and when they had drunk a placebo of blackcurrant cordial. Drinking beetroot juice enabled muscles to complete the same work more efficiently. Furthermore, after drinking beetroot juice, oxygen uptake was reduced during both low-intensity and high-intensity exercise. Beetroot juice doubled the amount of nitrate in the blood and reduced the rate of utilization of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the most immediate source of energy for muscles. Mallinson added one caveat: “There is one small warning, drinking beetroot can cause beeturia – in other words turn your urine pink. This is normal and no need to worry!” • The Beet It Stamina Shot’s is available in Holland & Barrett priced £1.79.
