New design creates a storm

A WRITING desk made from a 200-year-old walnut, which had been felled by the storm of ’87, is the latest commission from Suffolk designers Wren River Interiors. The tree, once growing on an ancestral Suffolk estate, had been languishing in a barn until craftsman Charles Wright put it to use. He said: “It had been cut into planks and veneers and left for 20 years in a barn, so I had the greatest pleasure in the sorting through the planks selecting the most suitable for the table frame and feature veneers.” Other pieces from the same tree included two large galleried desks, two small writing desks and a bookcase; some included banding on the tabletop, with laser cut lettering and personalised decorative detail. Charles continued: “My client had been on a creative writing course and wanted to commission a writing desk that not only would be a practical piece to work on but an inspirational one as well.” The style is reminiscent of a classical Prussian galleried piece combined with an English contemporary design, he added. “It had to be large enough to use a laptop on and have plenty of room for papers and files to be spread out and still leave room to manoeuver. The size was approx 1360:W x 950:D x 750:Desk top 1050: Gallery top,” said Charles. Prices start at £10,000.
