Guardian Life Elects John J. Brennan to its Board of Directors

New York, July 26, 2011 – The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian) announced today that John J. Brennan has been elected to the company’s Board of Directors. Mr. Brennan is Chairman Emeritus and Senior Advisor of the Vanguard Group, Inc., a Malvern, PA -based investment management company with more than $1.5 trillion of assets under management. He served as Vanguard’s Chief Executive Officer from 1996 to 2008 and Chairman of its Board from 1998 to 2009.

In addition to his posts with Vanguard, Mr. Brennan, 56, possesses extensive financial, accounting and corporate governance experience gained through numerous leadership roles in the financial services industry. He is Chairman of the Financial Accounting Foundation; a member of the Board of Governors for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Inc.; and is a Director of the Hanover Insurance Group, LPL Financial Corporation, and of the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Mr. Brennan also is a Trustee of the University of Notre Dame and the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Additionally, he is past Chairman of the Investment Company Institute.
