F. Gaviña & Sons, Inc. Focuses on Education and Gives Back to Coffee Growing Communities
Partnership with the ECOM Foundation, Farmer Brothers Coffee, and The Borgonovo Enterprise Group to aid schools in El Salvador
LOS ANGELES, October 18, 2011--F. Gaviña & Sons, Inc., producers of Don Francisco’s Coffee, one of the leading coffee retail brands in Southern California and among the top 10 nationally, today announced a new educational outreach program as part of their “Grounds for Caring” initiative. F. Gaviña & Sons, Inc. considers education to be a key ingredient in the development of both the individual and the community, which is why they have supported a variety of educational projects in coffee-producing countries such as Mexico and Nicaragua and are proud to announce their latest program in El Salvador.
Under their new initiative, F. Gaviña & Sons, Inc. has partnered with ECOM Foundation, Farmer Brothers Coffee, and The Borgonovo Enterprise Group to launch a three-year project, which directly aids two schools in El Salvador. El Salvador produces about 1.5 million bags of coffee each year. While the country has lost a significant volume of coffee production in the last 15 years, coffee is still a major part of the country’s GDP and important to its economic health. Through this initiative, by F. Gaviña & Sons, Inc. aims to empower the youth and families of the coffee growing regions in El Salvador so that they can have the tools and opportunities to drive their livelihoods.
The two schools involved in the project are San Carlos, which teaches 42 students from pre-school to 6th Grade, and Talnique, which teaches 391 students from pre-school to high school. Both schools were screened and selected based on the community’s need and long-term commitment to the program.
Similar to previous education initiatives F. Gaviña & Sons, Inc. has successfully undertaken in Mexico and Nicaragua, this program aims to improve the local schools infrastructures and launch remote learning facilities in partnership with Mexico’s top university, Tecnológico de Monterrey. These remote learning centers are innovative local educational centers, which help community members complete their grade school, high school, undergraduate and/or graduate studies via online education.
The company believes that in order to continue to deliver a great-tasting cup of coffee it must contribute to coffee’s sustainability at every level. “F. Gaviña & Sons, Inc. is proud to be directly involved in this program and help improve the quality of education and services available at these schools,” explained Michael Gaviña, Purchasing Manager and Resident Q Grader. “For us it is important not just provide financial assistance but also long term aid and emotional encouragement to the faculty and students that attend these schools. It is tremendously gratifying to be able to give back to the growing communities we have been working with since my grandfather founded the company.”
To further demonstrate the company’s dedication to this project and to the farming communities Mr. Gaviña traveled to El Salvador this past year to personally inaugurate the new initiative.
