On 1 July 2002, Handelsbanken is starting a new regional bank in the UK.
Ulf Sylvan, who has been in charge of the Bank's operations in the UK since 1994, has been appointed head of the UK Regional Bank and also Executive Vice President of Handelsbanken.

UK Regional Bank will be the eleventh regional bank at Handelsbanken. There are already seven regional banks in Sweden and one each in Norway, Finland and Denmark. Since it started in 1982, Handelsbanken's presence in the UK has progressed well, but in the last few years in particular, developments have accelerated through the expansion of the branch office network and the launch of Individual Banking for private customers.
Handelsbanken now has eight branches in the UK and others are planned, including branches in Wales and Scotland. The branch office network is being built up in exactly the same way and on the same principles as in the Nordic region. The Bank offers full retail services to local customers, both corporate and private. Handelsbanken also offers Internet and telephone banking services as well as card operations.
