Cecilia Malmström Visiting Professor at the School of Business, Economics and Law in Gothenburg
Cecilia Malmström, former EU Commissioner, has once again been appointed to the Assar Gabrielsson Visiting Professorship at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. Through this professorship, she aims to strengthen discussions about the new geopolitical reality facing Sweden and Europe.
"Recently, trade policy has become geopolitics and high politics in a way we have never seen before. I do not claim to have all the answers on how to deal with this new reality, but with my international experience, I look forward to discussing these issues with the students and researchers at the School of Business, Economics and Law," says Cecilia Malmström.
The Assar Gabrielsson Professorship will cover 20 per cent of her time from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2026. In addition to meeting with students and researchers, Cecilia Malmström will also participate in discussions and lectures with partners, alumni, and other external stakeholders in the School's network.
Cecilia Malmström previously held the Assar Gabrielsson Visiting Professorship in 2020-2021.
"We are delighted to have Cecilia Malmström back at the School of Business, Economics and Law. We live in geopolitically uncertain times, and with her background, Cecilia has knowledge and experience that is important for several parts of our operations," says Måns Söderbom, Dean of the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg.
Cecilia Malmström grew up in Gothenburg. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Gothenburg and has taught for several years on topics such as European politics, regionalism, and terrorism. She has extensive experience of EU cooperation as Sweden's EU Commissioner from 2010 to 2020, as Minister for EU Affairs in the Swedish government from 2006 to 2010, and as a Member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2006. Today, Cecilia Malmström is a Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) in Washington. She is also one of the initiators of the International Youth Think Tank, where young people advocate for openness and democracy.
