Harper Adams launching mobile phone app to aid prospective students

Harper Adams University College is preparing to welcome hundreds of prospective students and their friends and families to its first 2011 Autumn Open Day on September 21.

For the first time, visitors to next week’s open day will be able access their own, tailored “smart guide” to the University College campus and any courses they are interested in via the new CampusM mobile phone application.

QR codes (bar codes for mobile phones) will be displayed near the registration desk, and guests will have access to the Harper Adams wi-fi network so they can connect and make the most of this online experience, which includes campus tours and a suggested programme for the day.

Website officer James Smith will be on hand to give technical support to anyone who is not used to the new technology.

He said: “The smartphone app is a really useful tool for anyone visiting the campus for the first time. It’s easy to use and will help visitors to make the most of their day. Of course, we will also have student ambassadors on hand to give guided tours, and both staff and students will be able to answers questions about all aspects of life at Harper Adams, and its courses.”

Course areas at the University College, in Shropshire, include agriculture, animal health and welfare, food studies, engineering, land and countryside management, rural surveying, business and marketing.

New to the team behind the open day is Phil Sutton Green, 20, a Harper Adams student who is spending his placement year working as a marketing assistant for the University College.

He said: “I would encourage anyone thinking of going on to university to visit the campus and find out what it can offer. There’s only so much you can tell from a prospectus or website, but an open day gives you a much better idea of what to expect, and allows you to ask questions about everything from accommodation to how your chosen course operates.”

Phil, who is working towards a degree in Business Management and Marketing, added: “I love studying at Harper Adams because of the friendly atmosphere that surrounds the university. Harper is a unique and fantastic place. You don’t really understand what it is like until you get here”

Harper Adams was this week named the best University College in the UK for the sixth year running by the Sunday Times University Guide, and ranks in the Top 10 for student satisfaction and teaching excellence. To find out what makes it so special, pop along on September 21, between 9.30am and 4pm.

A second autumn open day is being held on Sunday, October 16. For more information visit www.harper-adams.ac.uk
