Fresh Produce Managers graduate at Shropshire's Harper Adams University

THE latest group of newly-qualified fresh produce managers has graduated at a special ceremony at Shropshire’s Harper Adams University. The 16 graduates have spent the last two years completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Food and Fresh Produce Management delivered by MDS (Management Development Services) and accredited by Harper Adams. Graduates from groups 28 and 29 were invited to the university’s Regional Food Academy on Friday to receive their certificates and to celebrate their successes with friends and family. Students launch pork pie business

TWO second year Food, Nutrition and Well Being students at Harper Adams University College have set up their own business producing luxury homemade pork pies. ‘Really Porky Pies’ is run by Paula Lobb and Michelle Evans, with production based on campus at the Regional Food Academy. They are launching their product line at the Christmas Farmers Market on December 2 with festive flavours including pork with apple or cranberry. 20-year-old Michelle from Church Stretton, said: “We wanted to do something in our spare time that would be relevant to our future careers in the food industry.

Student's food waste research

A Harper Adams student has identifyed areas of waste in the fresh produce supply chain.Harper Adams agri-food student, Sebastian James, spent the summer identifying areas of waste in the fresh produce supply chain as part of a 10-week research placement. 19-year-old Seb from Windsor worked for five weeks at the University College in Shropshire and five weeks at Reading University. His research looks at the produce that can’t be marketed from the field or greenhouse and during packaging and processing, specifically potatoes, lettuce, strawberries, cut herbs and spinach.
