Two Harris Pye Trainee Boiler Makers, Ashley Taylor and Charlie Wheeldon have recently completed the restoration of the of the historic wrought iron gates at St. Cattwg Church, Llanmaes.

The project was set as a training exercise by the Apprentice Skills Centre Manager, Mr Tony Evans. “This was an ideal opportunity to combine the newly acquired skills with the old traditional techniques of yesteryear” Tony says.

Harris Pye Group Technical Director, Mr Chris David who was born in the village said, “My family has a long association with St. Cattwg Church so when I heard the gates had fallen into disrepair I was only too keen to see if I could assist”.

The gates were transferred to the recently opened training centre at Llandow where the complete top half was replaced. “Some of the iron was so badly damaged we had to replace it, forging it out of raw steel the old fashioned way, using hammer and tongues. It was great experience and all for a good cause”, says Ashley

Church Warden, Jeffery Robinson sent Harris Pye a personnel letter of gratitude on behalf of himself, the Rector and the congregation, saying “I am convinced that they now look better than at any time in the last eighty or so years.”
