Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire – Monday 9 November, 2009; Bjorn the Polar Bear will be making a special trip to Coopers Square shopping centre on Sunday 22 November, to join the magical celebrations for the Burton upon Trent Christmas lights switch-on event.

An incredibly realistic life-size adult male Polar Bear, Bjorn is playful and mischievous but huggable too. A beautiful, fully animated, pod puppet that is sure to fascinate children and adults alike, Bjorn travels with his keeper and Arctic Explorer, Ursula. Shoppers will have the chance to meet the Arctic pair in their ice environment setting in the Main Square at 12pm, 2pm and 3.30pm on Sunday 22 November. Bjorn the Polar Bear and Ursula’s visit to Coopers Square will not only add to the festivities surrounding the town’s new Christmas lights switch-on, but also welcome Santa to his new Coopers Square castle house grotto. Coopers Square Centre Manager Dave Chadfield commented: “The town’s Christmas lights switch-on is a great event for the entire community of which Coopers Square is proud to be a sponsor. With new decoration schemes launched in Coopers Square and across Burton, we wanted to support the 2009 event with something special this year. “Bjorn the Polar Bear is magnificent and unbelievably realistic. I am sure his first visit to Coopers Square will prove immensely popular and add to the activities on offer around the town on this fantastic occasion.” Burton’s 2009 Christmas lights switch-on event promises to be one of the best yet as a new scheme is launched throughout the town, with special guests from Sky One’s Gladiators joining the proceedings. Siran and Spartan will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs while visitors of all ages can enjoy the traditional fun fair, markets and fireworks that help this popular annual community event go with a bang. Coopers Square will also unveil a new Christmas decoration scheme throughout the centre, which includes external lighting features for the first time, and a beautiful new grotto standing proud with its five metre-high Christmas tree. The Coopers Square grotto is open from 12pm until 5pm Monday to Friday, from 10am until 5pm on Saturdays, and from 11am until 4pm on Sundays. To celebrate late night shopping from 26 November, the grotto will be open from 12pm until 8pm on Thursdays and from 12pm until 3pm on Christmas Eve. Coopers Square shoppers can once again book online to see Santa by visiting www.bookfatherchristmas.co.uk or www.coopers-square.co.uk to choose your day and time. But don’t worry if you don’t want to book online, you can still see Santa the old fashioned way and just visit Coopers Square at your leisure. Please note there may be queuing at busy times. Shoppers can also take advantage of free parking in select town centre car parks, including the Coopers Square rooftop and central facilities, from 3pm on Thursdays from 26 November. -Ends- Notes to Editors In 1999, the Coopers Square shopping centre was acquired by Grosvenor – the leading international property development, investment and management group – for its Grosvenor Shopping Centre Fund.
