Croft, North Yorkshire – Sunday 23 June 2013; Sam Brabham brought home a brace of Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Scholarship podiums in the latest series rounds at Croft, the 18 year-old JTR driver notching up second and third place class finishes on debut at the North Yorkshire circuit.

Brabham opened his Croft account with a steady qualifying performance while battling to get the balance of his JTR Mygale in changeable conditions on Saturday.

An excellent start from ninth on the grid combined with set-up tweaks to his Eco-Boost Formula Ford ensured the Henley driver was in the mid-field mix for round 13. Chasing down the five-car battle for second, Brabham soon closed in on teammate Camren Kaminsky and snatched sixth from Andy Richardson on the final lap to cement Scholarship second place.

Despite another good getaway and places gained off the line for race two, a push wide and skip across the gravel lost valuable time. Although battling lateral slide through the corners, the Henley College student closed the gap to take Kaminsky and Sam Macleod on lap 13 while commanding the battle for seventh, and third in class, from James Abbott.

The third and final Formula Ford race of the weekend brought slightly more disappointing results for the single-seater debutant. Caught out at the lights and then locking wheels with Jayde Kruger, Brabham lost ground and had to re-catch the pack. Finally clear of Abbott at Tower Bend on lap nine, Brabham pushed on but the deficit was just too vast to re-capture and he had to settle for 10th overall and fourth in class.

Brabham commented: “This weekend has been one of my toughest in Formula Ford so far, but I’ve learnt more here than at any other round. I picked up two more class podiums and some reasonable results, but I know I need to work harder on keeping a consistently strong pace throughout the race weekend.

“We’ve got a bit of a summer break coming up, so I’m hoping to get some valuable testing in to ensure that I can continue to improve and come back stronger for Snetterton.”

Brabham will be back on track and aiming to add to his impressive Scholarship podium tally at Snetterton, 3-4 August, following the British Touring Car Championship summer break.
