Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire – Thursday, May 19, 2010; Coopers Square’s superstar car showcase - the first event held on the shopping centre’s rooftop car park - was hailed an outright success, attracting 15% more shoppers on Sunday May 16, like-on-like to comparative Sunday trading.

Headlined by some of the most famous cars of the last 60 years, and even Roary the Racing Car® and Big Chris, the event received such positive feedback from shoppers and stores that Coopers Square is already considering staging more displays on the recently refurbished facility in the next few months. Coopers Square shoppers would have been forgiven for thinking they had stepped back into an automotive time warp when visiting the rooftop car park last Sunday. Some of the best known cars from the TV screen were on show, giving people the rare chance to admire replicas of the Dukes of Hazzard General Lee 1969 Dodge Charger, the Ghostbusters Ecto1 1959 Cadillac Ambulance and a Trans AM original, better known as KITT from the hit 1980s Knight Rider TV series. A further trip down memory lane was provided courtesy of the Claymills Classic Car Club with a stunning showcase of over 15 members’ cars including a 1946 Triumph Roadster, a 2.5 litre 1965 V8 Daimler, a Jaguar E-Type 2+2 coupe and kit cars such as a 1992 Lotus Seven Sports, a JC Midget and a JZR Austin Seven. Also on display were three vehicles from the local VW Air-cooled Owners Club; two vintage campers – one which was restored just in time for the event, and a VW Beetle. TL Darby also presented five latest models from its New Street dealership. Even Roary the Racing Car® and Big Chris made the trip from Silver Hatch to Burton to keep visitors young and old entertained throughout the day with regular appearances in the Main Square. Dave Chadfield, Coopers Square Centre Manager, commented: “It was wonderful to see our first ever car park event so well supported by the local community and I’d like to thank everyone involved that helped to make it such a great day. “The cars on display were simply fantastic, I could have spent several hours admiring some of my favourite cars from the screen, the latest VW models, and the iconic cars so lovingly restored and maintained by members of the Claymills Classic Car Club. My special thanks go to them for adding such a special element to the day. “The free event obviously delivered great entertainment for all the family, with Roary the Racing Car always proving a big hit with our younger visitors. To welcome 15% more visitors last Sunday in comparison is really encouraging and we have received such good feedback from our customers and stores that we are already looking at staging another unique car event in the summer.” The recently refurbished Coopers Square rooftop car park offers the perfect town centre parking solution for Burton shoppers. Situated off New Street, boasting 200 spaces and direct access to Coopers Square, parking costs just £5 per day on weekdays, £1 for up to two hours, £2.50 for between two and four hours, and £1.50 on Sundays. -Ends- Please click on the thumbnails below to download the images.
