Media Release: FW Motorsport Seeks To Sign-off Debut Season In Style At Brands Hatch
Oxford, UK – Friday 4 October, 2013; FW Motorsport is aiming to finish its debut Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup season on a high with another string of strong results, as the British Touring Car Championship package season finale heads to Brands Hatch on 12-13 October.
With its 2.4333 miles of both fast sweeping and technical sections, the iconic Kent Grand Prix circuit ranks among team owner/driver Fergus Walkinshaw’s favourite and strongest tracks, having sealed his first full GT Supercup campaign with two top six finishes there last October.
Armed with his own sportscar team for 2013, the 22 year-old followed his 2012 Brands Hatch Indy circuit podium form with a fifth place on FW Motorsport’s first ever race weekend back in March. Since then, the fledgling Chipping Norton-based outfit has built valuable experience while underlining its potential as a front-running concern with Walkinshaw at the wheel.
FW Motorsport goes into the final event of the year off the back of a stirring performance during the team’s home circuit debut at Silverstone. Faced with a gearbox change during Friday practice, the team was burdened by a further enforced gearbox and engine change in between qualifying and the first race on Saturday.
A monumental team effort ensured that the FW Motorsport Ginetta G55 was back on track within 4.5 hours to complete the double-header event. Walkinshaw rewarded his crew with a charge from 22nd to 14th in race one and a further 12th place in race two to retain 10th in the title fight ahead of the final series rounds.
Walkinshaw commented; “I’m really looking forward to ending the season on a high at Brands Hatch as it’s one of my top tracks; I’ve enjoyed some strong results on both the Indy and GP layouts in recent years.
“We might still be running the new loan engine for the last rounds. We had to race the car straight out of the garage with minutes to spare at Silverstone, so we hope we’ll be able to run the engine in a bit more during Friday testing and get some power out of the corners, which will be key around the Grand Prix circuit.
‘I can’t believe we’re already coming to the end of FW Motorsport’s first season. It’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride but overall it’s been a good experience and we have lots to build on. We’ve worked flat out all season so we are hoping to have some fun and sign off the season in style.”
FW Motorsport will take to the track in official testing on Friday 11 October, before qualifying at 11.30 and the first race of the weekend at 15.10 on Saturday. Sunday sees a double bill of Ginetta GT Supercup action at 10.40 and 16.17; with the latter 14-lap race broadcast live on ITV4 as part of the extensive, action-packed BTCC coverage.
