London (UK) – Monday, May 21, 2012: Sam Brabham continued his solid progress in building race experience in the senior Rotax Max class on Sunday, May 20, demonstrating improved pace throughout his category debut at Glan y Gors, North Wales.

Brabham, aged 17, started his race preparation at the Welsh circuit with a positive test on Saturday, where he ran to within one tenth of a second of his more experienced DHR teammate, Barrie Pullinger, and just three tenths off the top times.

Although the Henley-on-Thames racer unfortunately couldn’t carry his testing pace into qualifying on Sunday, as he was unable to find good track position, Brabham knuckled down to notch up two ninth place Heat race finishes while slashing his earlier best qualifying time by six tenths of a second.

Now lapping on par with the front runners, Brabham’s consistently improving form saw him run as high as seventh in the select but vastly more experienced field, comfortably keeping on par with the leading pack. He was unable, however, to capitalise on his position when two of the leaders tussled and Brabham inadvertently clipped one of the karts returning to the track.

Quickly making up for lost momentum, Brabham did well to get back into the zone and recover another top 10 finish, taking the chequered flag in eighth place.

Brabham commented: “I went into my first senior Rotax Max race at Glan y Gors with the aim of getting on the pace from the first session. I achieved that in Saturday testing and was pleased with my lap times, but I lost some focus in qualifying and couldn’t get a clear run.

“Putting qualifying behind me, I returned to form for my Heats and posted similar times to the front runners. The Final was my strongest race of the day, where I was comfortably matching the leaders. It was just unfortunate that I lost momentum when I clipped one of the karts returning to the track, but I recovered quickly to salvage eighth.

“So, for my next race weekend I’ll be concentrating not only on hitting the ground running but ensuring I keep consistent and improve my pace throughout the event.”
