Media Release: Walkinshaw Continues Faultless FW Motorsport Points Run At Donington Park

Donington Park, Leicestershire – Saturday 20 April 2013; Fergus Walkinshaw continued his new sportscar team’s consistent Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup points run at Donington Park today, the FW Motorsport Ginetta G55 securing another top 10 finish in the first of three races this weekend.

Opening FW Motorsport’s debut race weekend at the Leicestershire circuit with promising pace in this morning’s 20-minute qualifying session, Walkinshaw ran as high as second fastest around the 1.9-mile National circuit.

Posting ever improving lap-times, the recently turned 22 year-old looked set for a top six grid slot when a second red flag stoppage again scrubbed his best time. And with just four minutes remaining at the restart, Walkinshaw took the sensible decision to conclude the session and conserve tyres for race one.

Settling for 11th on the grid for the fourth round of the season, the Chipping Norton racer secured a solid start to take 10th on the charge down to Redgate. His race chances, however, were compromised early on thanks to a knock into the kerbing at the Chicane.

With his left front tyre pushed off its beading and losing pressure, Walkinshaw did well to defend his position and was looking to join the tail end of the fight for fifth place when a full course caution was called on lap nine. After three laps circulating under the Safety Car, green flag racing resumed on lap 12. But with just two laps added to the original race distance, Walkinshaw settled for another solid points haul in 10th spot.

Walkinshaw commented: “The FW Motorsport Ginetta G55 has been on solid form all week, from testing on Thursday when we ran fourth fastest, and we knew there was much more to come in race trim. It was a shame I was pushed onto the kerbs on the opening lap, as we really didn’t get the chance to work our way through the field like we did at Brands Hatch. Still, it’s good to secure some solid points today ahead of the two 16-lap feature races tomorrow.”

The British Touring Car Championship package racing action continues at Donington Park tomorrow, with rounds five and six of the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup set to take place at 10.45 and 16.22.
