Media Release: Walkinshaw Takes Eight For FW Motorsport At Rockingham
Rockingham, Northamptonshire – Sunday 15 September 2013: Fergus Walkinshaw finished FW Motorsport’s Rockingham Motor Speedway debut with a further eighth place points-paying finish in round 22 of the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup today (Sunday).
The debutant team from neighbouring Oxfordshire went into the second race of the weekend confident of another strong result following Walkinshaw’s fine form yesterday. But hopes of repeating Saturday’s blistering seven place opening lap charge were dashed due to a stall off the line, while Walkinshaw was blocked-in by a stationery Tom Oliphant immediately in front.
Despite being one of the last away for round 22, Walkinshaw wasted no time in catching the pack to get back into the mix and picked up four places to run eighth approaching the midway point.
But with significant damage sustained to the front splitter and right front wheel, Walkinshaw did well to bring the FW Motorsport Ginetta G55 home to the chequered flag and score vital championship points as the series heads into the final two events of the season.
Walkinshaw commented: “We were really hoping that the forecast wet weather was going to come into play this afternoon, as I was certain that I’d be able to work my way up the grid to get another strong finish. The rain never really came and a disappointing start put us a bit on the back foot.
‘With the damage sustained in the mid-field battles it was just a case of nursing the car home to get some points. So now we just turn our attentions to the team’s home Silverstone round in two weeks time.”
