Heart Aerospace CEO Anders Forslund to Highlight Nordic Leadership in Electric Aviation at Ministerial Meeting in Gothenburg
Anders Forslund, co-founder and CEO of Heart Aerospace, will address the Nordic Infrastructure Ministers today at a ministerial meeting held in Gothenburg. The meeting, chaired and hosted by Swedish Minister for Infrastructure, Andreas Carlson, under Sweden's rotating presidency of the Nordic Council for 2024, gathers Nordic ministers and key regional representatives to discuss the future of sustainable infrastructure in the Nordic countries.
Heart Aerospace develops the ES-30, a hybrid-electric regional aircraft poised to revolutionize sustainable aviation, not only by decarbonizing regional air travel, but also by offering lower operational costs.
The global airline industry has already committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions from their operations by 2050[1]. But delivering that goal needs action on many fronts including the development of new aircraft and propulsion technology as well as government support.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) can only address around 70% of aviation's decarbonization needs, the remaining 30% must come from other channels including cutting-edge technologies like those developed by Heart Aerospace. Forslund will call on Nordic ministers to champion these new technologies. He will highlight the Nordic region’s strategic position as a home to several pioneering OEMs, including Heart Aerospace, emphasizing the necessity of government support to bring these revolutionary aircraft to market globally. Forslunds’ main messages will focus on two areas:
1. The Need for Public Funding
The lengthy R&D cycles inherent in aerospace, means government financial support is essential for the successful market entry of these new aircraft technologies. No modern-day aircraft has come to market without government support, whether that be through structured loans or other financial instruments which bridge the gap beyond private sector investment. The Nordic region, and Sweden, are ideally positioned to provide that support and retain these world leading new technology manufacturers in their states. The risk if they do not is that the technology will be developed outside of the Nordics, potentially bleeding skills, technology and jobs.
2. Nordic Leadership and Policy Framework
The region needs a robust Nordic leadership in establishing global policies that foster the deployment of electric aviation. These policies could include tax rules, policies to incentivise the uptake of new technology aircraft or reduce operating costs when they are deployed and encourage infrastructure deployment in time for entry into service. The Nordics are uniquely able to lead the setting of global standards, and to create a comprehensive strategy that enables electric aviation to thrive.
