Finland is emerging as a leading country for new material innovations for the textile industry. At the same time, young Finnish designers continue their global success: Aalto University's Tuuli-Tytti Koivula won the Alpha Fashion Awards at the Copenhagen Fashion Week in February 2023, Aalto University's Jenny Hytönen won the Hyerés Festival main prize last October. In addition, the visibility of numerous Finnish brands such as Latimmier and Rolf Ekroth at international fashion weeks this year has been exceptionally broad.

Fashion in Helsinki is an annual fashion event that brings together young designers, new brands, material innovations and international experts. The main events of the week such as the Transformation Conference, the Fashion in Helsinki runway show featuring Aalto Recoded, By Hinders, Ervin Latimer, Rolf Ekroth and VAIN and Aalto University graduation show focus on new material innovations, creativity, gender issues and equality.

“It is important that Finnish material innovations and internationally recognized design expertise are combined”, says Miia Koski, CEO of Juni Communication. “The field of fashion is going through one of its biggest transition periods. The green transition is underway, and a textile strategy is being prepared in the EU, which will regulate e.g. the use of materials and recycling of textiles. This offers Finland a lot of opportunities, but big changes require both domestic and international cooperation.”

Fashion in Helsinki strengthens international networks and contributes to the internationalization of Finnish innovations and creative know-how. This May, Fashion in Helsinki invites Swedish and other Nordic fashion companies and professionals to Finland to discuss cooperation opportunities as part of the Transformation Conference in collaboration with Scandinavian Mind, Helsinki Partners and Business Finland.

"The Nordic countries are similar in many ways, and our commonalities are shown in the current state of the fashion industry. Our shared values of equality and innovation have birthed some of the most forward-thinking materials and companies, as well as fostered a slew of creative talent in global demand. In the midst of the most transformative period that fashion has ever seen, we want to explore how the Nordics can deepen their impact on the industry — together", comments Vappu Mänty, Director of PR and Communication at Helsinki Partners.

In January, Fashion in Helsinki published a collaboration with Copenhagen Fashion Week, the aim of which is to help Finnish brands get a foothold in the international market. In addition, international sales and visibility are supported by the long-standing cooperation with Pitti Uomo.
