  • Tomatin Pro-Am hailed another success
  • Golfers already booked for 2015 event
  • New film will promote Highlands to golf tourists

A short film of a prestigious golf tournament is to be used to promote the Highlands as a leading golfing tourism destination to visitors worldwide.

The three-minute film was shot during the three-day Tomatin Single Malt Homecoming Pro-Am which was held from 30 September to 2 October over a trio of leading links courses.

The 54-hole event featured 200 players in 50 teams - led by former Ryder Cup player and captain Bernard Gallacher - who played at Castle Stuart Golf Links, Royal Dornoch Golf Club and The Nairn Golf Club.

The three clubs are part of the Highland Golf Links (HGL) partnership, which also includes the Kingsmills Hotel and Culloden House Hotel, Inverness; the Royal Golf Hotel in Dornoch and the Golf View Hotel & Spa in Nairn, and promotes Play and Stay destination breaks.

The film, made by Dingwall-based DP Digital Media, was commissioned by HGL as part of its marketing initiatives. As well as spectacular shots of the three scenic courses, it features short interviews with Bernard Gallacher, HGL chairman Fraser Cromarty and Tomatin sales director Stephen Bremner.

The Pro-Am attracted golfers from Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland and across the UK, with Nairn Dunbar's Gavin Hay winning the professional event and the £6,000 first prize with a 6 under par total of 207. He shot a three-under 68 at Nairn, a four-under 68 at Castle Stuart and a one-over 71 at Royal Dornoch.

Tied for second were Neil Fenwick, from Dunbar Golf Club, and winner for the last two years Stephen Gray, from Hayston in East Dunbartsonshire, who finished a shot behind on 208.

Dutchman Wouter de Vries and the High Clay team won the three-round Pro-Am.

Already a number of teams from across the UK and from the US have booked to take part in the 2015 event.

Fraser Cromarty said: “This year’s Pro-Am was another great success. It is now an established and much-anticipated event in the golfing calendar which is shown by the number of players who have already booked for next year.

“The film produced this year highlights the quality of our three spectacular courses and four luxury accommodation partners and will be a valuable new tool in marketing the area at home and abroad.”

Stephen Bremner added: “We are delighted with the response to the event this year, our third year as title sponsor. We were proud to have Bernard Gallacher leading the teams this year and extremely pleased that the event was able to support his crucial defibrillator campaign.”

In December Gallacher started a nationwide campaign to make automated external defibrillators (AEDs) widely available at golf clubs and driving ranges in the UK and Ireland.

In August last year he suffered a cardiac arrest and spent several days in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after falling ill at a function in the city. He credits the quick thinking of hotel staff and the availability of a defibrillator at the venue where he was due to speak for helping his recovery.

All three HGL courses have defibrillators available in emergencies and Royal Dornoch Golf Club is currently raising money for the Bernard Gallacher campaign to have another machine at the Championship Course’s Halfway House.

In August, Tomatin installed two defibrillators inside the distillery and adjacent visitor centre for use by staff, visitors and members of the community. A third machine was also gifted to Carrbridge Golf Club.

Castle Stuart Golf Links hosted the Scottish Open for three successive years from 2011-2013 and will hold the event again in 2016.

The Nairn Golf Club, which hosted the Walker Cup in 1999 and the Curtis Cup in 2012, will also be home to the 2016 Home Internationals competition.

Royal Dornoch’s Championship course has been voted the 6th best golf course in the world by leading magazine Golf Digest.
