Data from Travel Company Hipmunk Reveals Up to 31 Percent Savings for Early Bookers
SAN FRANCISCO (May 6, 2014) — According to results from the 2014 Hipmunk Summer Travel Survey, July 4th is the biggest travel holiday of the summer. And as the weather heats up, so do flight prices. Hipmunk evaluated historical flight data and found that the best time to book July 4th travel is during the week of Memorial Day. Hipmunk discovered that those who book from May 26 to June 1 could save nearly $150 just by booking early.
Based on 2013 July 4th flight data, rates increase exponentially the longer travelers wait to book. On average, early birds who booked during the week of Memorial Day 2013 spent $417 on airfare. Alternatively, last year’s travelers who booked three weeks after Memorial Day spent an average of $547 on their flights, which is 31 percent more than the early birds.
“It’s not a surprise that buying airfare early will save money,” said Adam Goldstein, co-founder and CEO at Hipmunk. “When July 4th falls on a Friday—like it does this year—even more people travel, because they can make it a 3-day weekend. That means more competition. Travelers who book early will not only save money on average, but also get the most convenient flight times and avoid unnecessary layovers for a less agonizing trip.”
