HiQ has received an order from New Zealand media corporation The Dominion Post to develop a new control system for the corporation’s newspaper printing works.

HiQ has around 15 years’ experience of working with players in the daily press. Most of the processes involved in a modern newspaper printing facility are automated, with high requirements of system reliability. For many years, for example, HiQ has worked on developing control systems for the packing halls of various newspaper printing works – i.e. the systems that ensure that the newspapers are handled, packaged and loaded for transport to retailers and distributors. In its assignment for The Dominion Post, HiQ has developed a new control system that will replace the existing one in order to ensure a more efficient, more capable process for the packaging and distribution of newspapers in the best way possible. “Our client needed a new system capable of meeting its quality requirements for the handling of processes in the packing hall, in order to ensure punctual deliveries. The new system also increases the capacity of the printing facility. HiQ has unique expertise in the development of control systems for the newspaper industry – expertise from which The Dominion Post has been able to benefit,” says Magnus Gudén, Managing Director of HiQ Cats. The Dominion Post publishes New Zealand’s second biggest daily newspaper, which has the same name. With around 400 employees, the corporation includes the newspaper’s main editorial office and printing facility as well as local editorial and advertising offices. The printing facility print on average 300,000 copies per day. The Dominion Post is owned by the international media group Fairfax Ltd., which reported turnover of approximately SEK 11 billion in 2004/2005. In addition to The Dominion Post, Fairfax also publishes a number of other leading daily newspapers and magazines in Australia and New Zealand. “HiQ has worked on developing business-critical systems in various industries for many years. The assignment for The Dominion Post is an example of how HiQ’s expertise can help improve our client’s efficiency and productivity. It is also a good example of how HiQ’s expertise can help enterprises in many parts of the world,” says Lars Stugemo, President and CEO of HiQ International.
