August 23, 2011, London ON – Holcim Canada Inc., a leading producer and supplier of products and services for the construction industry showcased its sustainable construction solutions and shared best practices on how it partners with the local community to turn potential challenges into solutions at the Association of Municipalities (AMO) conference held from August 21 to 24 in London, Ontario.

At one of the workshop sessions, Paul Ostrander, President and CEO at Holcim Canada spoke about how the company meets public infrastructure demands with sustainable innovative solutions and balances the triple bottom line of economic prosperity, social responsibility and environmental performance. He also highlighted Holcim’s approach to responsible sourcing of aggregates and the company’s collaboration on Socially and Environmentally Responsible Aggregates (SERA), an independent not-for-profit organization whose mission is to develop world class environmental and social certification standards for the aggregate industry in Canada.

“Holcim proudly serves 444 municipalities in Ontario and we are deeply committed to contributing to the communities we operate in through our products and services but also through our various community initiatives” said Bill Galloway Sr. Vice President, Holcim Canada. “We aim to invest in what matters to the local community be it local housing through our partnership with Habitat for Humanity, healthcare through our various fundraising initiatives for local hospitals such as the Hospital for Sick Children, McMaster Children’s Hospital and the Halton Healthcare Hospitals and by creating and supporting the development of community spaces such as the Milton Center for the Arts, the Brant Waterway Trail, and the North Dumfries Community Centre.” Galloway added.

Some of the sustainable solutions Holcim Canada featured at the conference were the use of recycled aggregates, rapid bridge replacement technology and Portland Limestone cement which produces a strong and durable concrete with up to 10% fewer CO2 emissions. The focus was on the use of these innovative technologies to address lifecycle costs when making infrastructure decisions. By considering the long-term costs of these decisions, municipalities can invest wisely and ensure their infrastructure choices will benefit municipalities and citizens for years to come.

The AMO Annual Conference is Ontario's leading municipal sector conference. It is a forum for learning, networking and analysis for elected officials, municipal staff, policy analysts, media and anyone associated with the municipal sector.
