Exam results published by the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) show that 86.7% of Home Learning College students successfully gained their ICB payroll and bookkeeping qualifications this month – higher than the national average of 85.5% for the same courses. Almost 300 students have taken their ICB exams in recent weeks having studied by distance learning with Home Learning College – the UK’s biggest provider of professionally accredited home study courses. Results for the ICB Level III Diploma in Payroll Management were particularly impressive, with 95.8% of Home Learning College students passing the exam and 79% securing a distinction. The ICB is the largest bookkeeping institute in the world. The organisation promotes and maintains the standards of bookkeeping as a profession. Knowledge and skills are recognised through a series of relevant qualifications and membership grades that acknowledge academic attainment, working experience and competence. “There is a continued demand from businesses across the country for professionals with demonstrable bookkeeping skills. Securing a recognised industry qualification from an organisation such as the ICB is a great way to kick start an interesting and highly flexible bookkeeping career and can also act as the first step in becoming a professional accountant,” says Gillian Tucker, Home Learning College’s Bookkeeping Faculty Manager. Gillian continues: “Home Learning College has been an accredited provider of ICB courses since 1996 and all our bookkeeping tutors work hard to ensure students receive the highest level of support. This level of commitment is reflected in these latest results and we would like to congratulate all our successful students on achieving their new qualifications.” Karen Walker works full time as an administrator and finance office. She has just completed ICB Practical Bookkeeping Level I, achieving 100% in all her assignments and the final exam. Karen comments on her experience as a Home Learning College student: “I work full time and my employer is paying for my studies with the aim of developing the financial side of my role. Before starting the course I was quite daunted by the idea of further study but the course material is easy to follow and the tutorial support provided by Home Learning College has been outstanding. My queries are always answered quickly and I also use the Virtual Learning Community to chat to tutors and other students on the same course, which really helps. “I have a husband and young daughter but, because the course is delivered by distance learning, I have been able to study at my own pace and gain my new qualification while meeting all my work and family commitments. I was surprised and thrilled to receive my exam results and I can’t wait to progress to Level II and learn more skills that I can put into practice at work.” Home Learning College was the most nominated training institution in The Lucas 2009, organised by the ICB. This inaugural ceremony rewarded the organisations and individuals who achieved the most in ICB training within the UK during 2009. Home Learning College staff and students achieved seven nominations, across five categories, and Deputy Bookkeeping Faculty Manager Jo Fredriksen walked away as Tutor of the Year on the night.
