Housing 21 has published a new dementia design guide.

Creating Better Living Environments for People with Dementia highlights the key issues to consider in the design and management of extra care and residential care for people with dementia.

Launched at this year's UK Dementia Congress, the guide looks at the latest thinking with examples of best practice in building design for people with dementia.

David Williams, head of strategy development for Housing 21 said: "Good design can maximise a person's independence, particularly if careful consideration is given to orientation and the use of visual cues. There is a strong interconnection between the way in which extra care facilities and specialist dementia units are designed and, if designed well, both can offer environments that are suitable for people with dementia right through to the end of their lives."

Housing 21 has a strong track record in the provision of specialist dementia care services, including housing solutions and ground-breaking research on dementia. They estimate that over 4,000 of their current customers are living with dementia and with dementia prevelence rates set to increase it is estimated that this figure could rise to over 10,000 in as little as five years.

Copies of the guide can be downloaded from Housing 21's website at www.housing21.co.uk/about-us/publications/corporate-and-financial.
