Further funding supports recycling project
Housing 21 has been awarded £76,000 of funding from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to support the rollout of their recycling project.
The latest award follows a grant of £58,000 last September to help the leading provider of housing, care and health services for older people involve residents in a recycling programme which diverts waste from rubbish bins into Green Johanna composters. The grant has been made through Defra’s Household Reward and Recognition Scheme for recycling, reuse, repair and reduction of waste.
The additional funding, which is spread across two years, will enable Housing 21 and project partner, AmicusHorizon, to extend the roll out to housing schemes in Kent and South Wiltshire.
The initiative has already seen sheltered housing residents across Sussex reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. Other benefits enjoyed by residents are a reduction in unpleasant odours from their bin stores and the availability of high quality compost for use in the garden.
Les Clarke, director of operations for Housing 21 said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this additional funding. This is a fantastic project which has reaped huge benefits for the schemes already taking part.”
So far 30 housing schemes have benefited from the funding and the additional funding will allow Housing 21 and AmicusHorizon to roll the project out to a further 45 schemes.
