MP revisits Bristol sheltered housing scheme
Residents and staff at John James Court in Lockleaze welcomed a visit by local MP Charlotte Leslie. The visit, which was organised by Housing 21, gave the Bristol North West MP the opportunity to view the facilities and meet with residents at the 34 apartment scheme.
Last year John James Court was named joint winner of the 2011 Spring Online Best Event award for their Silver Surfers’ Day event, which was held in 2010 to promote the use of digital technologies by older people. Charlotte Leslie was one of the guests at the event, which enabled residents and other local older people to try out new technologies including Wii games, ipads, ebooks and much more.
In addition to their computing and online activities, residents also enjoy a range of weekly social events and entertainment.
Commenting on her visit, Ms Leslie said: “I was struck not only by the wonderful facilities at John James Court but also by the fact that the residents clearly are getting so much out of it all.
”It is vital as a society that no one is left behind as technology marches on and while it is important to ensure our young people have the skills, it is equally clear that digital technology can transform the lives of the elderly, especially if mobility becomes an issue.
“The work done by the team at John James Court is outstanding and I was thrilled to be able to join everyone.”
Simon Bostock, Regional Operations Director for Housing 21 added: “We’re delighted that Charlotte Leslie has been able to visit John James Court and meet with staff and residents again. This is a very lively and active court and residents are very proud of the scheme as well as their achievements with digital technology.”
