TV Actor launches older people’s computer training

Actor Graham Cole, who played PC Tony Stamp in television’s The Bill, dropped in for morning coffee to launch a computer training programme for older people at Emily Court in Wilmington, Dartford.

Around 15 people attended the event at the Housing 21 extra care scheme and ten people signed up to the course on offer. The free computer training for beginners and improvers, run by S&G Training, is designed to get older people online.

The initiative is part of Housing 21’s recently launched Social Activity Service, which aims to provide a range of enjoyable and educational sessional activities. The leading provider of care, health and housing services hopes the programme will provide opportunities for social stimulation, education, health promotion and personal care.

Guest celebrity, Graham Cole, mingled with the new trainees, including residents of Emily Court as well as other older people from the surrounding local community.

One of the residents, Pearl O’Connor said: “It was a wonderful morning, very interesting and I learnt a lot. One of the girls showed me how to get on to the John Lewis website, which will be useful for Christmas, and it was great to meet Graham Cole.”

The event gave the silver surfers an opportunity to find out about using a computer as well as what’s available on the internet, including email, ebay, shopping online, Facebook and Twitter.

Emily Court was developed by Housing 21 in partnership with Kent County Council as part of the ‘Better Homes Active Lives’ project.
