(Stavanger, 18 October 2007): Badger Explorer ASA has appointed Stig Hetlevik as chief executive of its Badger Plasma Technology AS subsidiary. Mr Hetlevik has worked in the oil and offshore industry since the early 1980s, and has substantial technological and management experience of drilling and well activities from a number of Norwegian and international oil companies. Badger Explorer was included on the Oslo Stock Exchange`s Oslo Axess list in mid-June, and has two business areas. The first of these covers development of a revolutionary method/tool for petroleum exploration. In addition, the company has an exclusive licence to exploit the patented plasma channel drilling (PCD) technique. One application for the latter solution is removing scale and other obstructions in production/injection wells with the aid of sparks generated at high electrical voltages. This licence and developing opportunities offered in the oil industry market will be handled through Badger Plasma Technology, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary. `Removing scale from wells and production systems with PCD addresses a world market worth hundreds of millions of dollars,` says chief executive Kjell Erik Drevdal at Badger Explorer. `PCD has a unique potential in terms of increased efficiency and lower price compared with today`s methods for solving this deposition problem. Mr Hetlevik will play a central and leading role in commercialising the technique` Aged 49, Mr Hetlevik was one of the founders in 2005 of Offshore Rig Services - now part of Awilco Offshore ASA - and has experience from Prosafe, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, Saga Petroleum and Schlumberger. Badger Explorer concluded a licence agreement in November 2006 with Britain`s University of Strathclyde, which has developed the PCD technology and holds the patent. This deal covers final development and commercialisation. On the basis of the licence agreement and financial support from the Research Council of Norway`s Demo2000 programme, a demonstration project was launched in December 2006. This aims to test and demonstrate the suitability of PCD for use under drilling and downhole conditions in the oil and gas industry. An agreement of full financing of the PCD project was concluded by Badger Explorer with Shell Technology Norway and Statoil in April 2007. This deal has a budget framework of NOK 7.7 million and an 18-month timetable.
