i3 launches new breed of streaming servers - On show at CeBIT 2003 i3 launches a new generation of cost-effective streaming servers for video-on-demand and IP-TV services. i3 micro technology (www.i3micro.com), the Swedish datacom company that develops and markets solutions for IP-TV, video streaming and VoIP, announced today the launch of a new breed of extremely cost-effective Mood streaming servers, ideal for distributed deployment at the edge of larger networks and for the hospitality segment. The new Mood servers come in two versions, the MoodLive server for live IP-TV and the MoodMovie server for Video-on-Demand services. Both servers are supported by the i3 Centre server for management and provisioning "The new sleek servers are physically the smallest on the market. i3's asset management tools, clustering capability, and software-based encryption coupled with the servers' small size, open up new possibilities where our offering is superior compared to traditional technology. Hotels, cruise ships, trains are just a few examples of where our customers want to put them", says Hans Holmberg, President of i3 micro technology. About the i3 Mood Movie server Mood Movie is a compact cost-effective streaming server providing up to 50 Mbps of MPEG-2 streaming to IP-based set-top boxes such as the Mood Box. 250 GB of content storage enables video-on-demand viewers to choose from 100 high-quality full-length movies per server using commands such as fast-forward, rewind, and pause the way they are used to on existing home entertainment equipment. About the i3 Mood Live server Mood Live provides an extremely cost-effective solution for redistribution of digitally encoded TV broadcast over IP-based broadband networks. Fitted with an industry standard DVB-ASI interface, Mood Live will multicast up to 8 satellite channels per server to an unlimited number of set-top boxes. Using available i3 software tools the system can easily be scaled for larger installations. The Mood streaming servers are 19" wide, 9½" deep and only 1U high. The reduced depth enables two servers to be mounted back-to-back in a standard 19" rack when optimal density is required. "Both servers come with content encryption and a built-in security system. The technology is the same as the one used for Internet banking and in military applications", says Chris Chalkitis, VP of Product Management.
