Belarus Moves Up Two Positions in ICT Development Index

On November 30, the International Telecommunication Union released the 2015 edition of its annual Measuring the Information Society Report. The annual report features key information and communication technology (ICT) tools to measure the information society, including the ICT Development Index (IDI), which captures the level of ICT developments in 167 economies worldwide and compares progress made since the year 2010.

This year, Belarus moved up two positions in the IDI and was ranked 36thamong 167 countries with an IDI value of 7.18. South Korea is the leader with an index value of 8.93, followed by Denmark and Iceland. Russia occupies the 45thposition and Kazakhstan was ranked 58th.

Over the last few years, Belarus has improved its ranking. Last year, the country occupied the 38thposition, in 2010 and 2008 it was ranked 50thand 84threspectively.

The IDI contains the sub–indexes access, use, and skills and 11 indicators, such as mobile–cellular telephone subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, percentage of households with a computer, percentage of individuals using the Internet, wireless broadband subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, and adult literacy rate.

The report also lists Belarus as one of the most dynamic and high–performing countries in the changes in IDI value and ranking since the year 2010.

According to the report, 3.2 billion people are now online, while mobile–cellular subscriptions have reached more than 7 billion worldwide.
