In September, 2014, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British company specializing in education and study abroad, released its annual QS World University Rankings 2014/15.

The QS World University Ranking is aimed at helping students around the world make an informed choice of a university that suits their needs. The ranking was first compiled in 2004 and is in its tenth year.

The ranking features more than 800 universities around the world, which makes three percent of all universities. However, the number of universities being assessed is more than 3,000. The individual ranking positions are given to the best 400 universities. The universities that occupy positions down the list are placed within groups starting from 401–410 and up to 701+.

The survey compares top 800 universities across four areas, namely research, teaching, employability, and international outlook.

The QS World University Ranking survey evaluates universities using the following six indicators:

  • Academic reputation based on a global survey of academics
  • Employer reputation based on a global survey of graduate employers
  • Faculty/student ratio, an indication of commitment to teaching
  • Citations per faculty, an indication of research impact
  • International student ratio, measuring international diversity of the student community
  • International staff ratio, measuring international diversity of the academic faculty.

According to the survey, the Belarusian State University (BSU) entered the list of World's Best 500 Universities for the first time ever occupying the 491–500 group. Along with BSU, the Belarusian National Technical University is included in the QS World University Ranking 2014/2015 and is placed within the 701+ group.

This year, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge, and Imperial College London make the world's top three institutions of higher education.
