ICA to assess climate impact of its private label products

Solna May 11, 2007

ICA is going to analyze the climate change impact of at least 100 of its private label products from a life cycle perspective. The initiative is designed to provide ICA with data on the carbon dioxide emissions of each product from field to store, among other things.
The product analyses are due to be completed by the end of the year. They are conducted in association with the Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology (SIK).

The aim of the project for ICA is to gain a greater understanding of the impact its private label products in particular, and food in general, have on our climate.
"By analyzing at least 100 products we will obtain plenty of valuable information that we can then use to investigate the climate impact of the entire ICA merchandise assortment," says Kerstin Lindvall, Head of Environment and Corporate Social Responsibility at ICA AB.

The analyses will also provide necessary data for decision-making on possible climate labeling for ICA products.

The lifecycle analysis method is being used to track products throughout the entire production chain, from growing and industrial processing to packaging and transport.

"We have just started looking at which of our private label products we should analyze," says Kerstin Lindvall.
