ICDC College Staff, Faculty, Students and Sponsors Raise Thousands for American Cancer Society’s Inaugural Westchester “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” on June 6, 2010

LOS ANGELES, May 26, 2010 – When Mercedes Gabriel, ICDC College’s Student Services Supervisor, approached various staff and faculty about raising money to fight Breast Cancer for the American Cancer Society, her passion and commitment for the cause was quite evident to all.  As the Student Services Supervisor for ICDC College’s Lawndale campus, Ms. Gabriel assists students who face a number of challenges that threaten their ability to complete their education, from lack of transportation, child care concerns and homelessness, to dealing with the shock of hearing the medical pronouncement, “You have breast cancer.”

“This past March, American Cancer Society took part in ICDC College’s “Creating Healthy Communities” Health Fair and provided students with information about the upcoming Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (Making Strides) walkathon in June. I realized then that each of us shouldn’t have to be personally affected to help in any way possible” Ms. Gabriel said.  Since the walk’s inception in 1993, Making Strides has raised more than $400 million for the fight against breast cancer. Since 2009, nearly 700,000 people have walked across America to help invoke awareness and raise money for a cure.

Adam Sloey who is responsible for managing the American Cancer Society’s Inaugural Westchester Making Strides on June 6, 2010, dispels concerns of any individual who might think that participating in a walk may not be enough to tackle a health giant like breast cancer. “Making Strides gives individuals the power to fight back” Mr. Sloely said. “Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in California. One out of every nine women in this state will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime.  As the largest private funder of cancer research, the American Cancer Society has been leading the way in finding cures and providing services to those facing cancer and their families.”

According to Mr. Sloey, there is good news on the battlefield against breast cancer, due to the advancement in treatment, early detection, and public awareness brought on by efforts such as Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.  “As more and more women are being diagnosed in the early stages, breast cancer mortality has declined by more than 31% in recent years, which goes a long way in increasing their chances of survival,” Mr. Sloely said.

ICDC College is partnering with a number of organizations including El Clasificado, Power 106 and Latino 96.3 radio stations, Working World, and Best Deals Show.com to support Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. “We shouldn’t have to wait for our mother, aunt, grandmother or maternal matriarch to become afflicted with the disease or even pass away before we start doing something,” said Ms. Gabriel as she held a card given to her from a cancer survivor student in her office.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer will take place on Sunday, June 6, 2010 at the Westchester Recreation Center at 7000 W. Manchester Avenue, Los Angeles, CA at 8:00 a.m. Registration is free. Please call ICDC College at 1-800-213-5229 on how you can partner with them for this event, or visit makingstrides.icdccollege.edu to sign up and donate online.
