LOS ANGELES, June 23, 2010 –  Participants and onlookers at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walkathon earlier this month couldn’t help but notice the hundreds of people who arrived early wearing uniform white t-shirts and water bottles at the Westchester Recreation Center in Los Angeles, CA.  That’s because ICDC College students, faculty, family and friends showed up in mass to walk 1.86 miles in support of those who have suffered, succumbed or survived breast cancer; individuals included in ICDC’s own student population. ICDC College also partnered with a number of organizations including CBS Outdoor, Power 106 and Latino 96.3 radio stations, Working World, El Classificado, and Best Deals Show.com to help raise funds to increase awareness and support the search for a cure. According to Adam Sloey, American Cancer Society’s Manager of Special Events, ICDC College and American Cancer Society supporters collectively raised over $49,000 for this event.

Stephanie Perez, ICDC College’s Manager of Student Affairs expressed the importance of not only ICDC College taking part in this event as a whole, but for her personally. “I was really excited about the huge turnout that we had that day, but my thoughts kept turning to my mother, a breast cancer survivor and two of my aunts who unfortunately passed away from this disease. Participating in this walk made me feel as if I was doing what I could to support the cure, as well as offer encouragement and hope to anyone else who may be undergoing the same stress and heartfelt pain that I endured.”

Patricia Franklin, a 60 year old graduate of ICDC College’s Medical Assistant program in Lawndale is both a breast cancer and Katrina survivor. Ms. Franklin found out that she had breast cancer shortly after moving to New Orleans in the summer of 2005.  “I was able to escape New Orleans before the hurricane hit and return to Los Angeles all within a week. Shortly after arriving back in LA, I had to undergo another biopsy and testing since all of my medical records was destroyed by Katrina” Ms. Franklin said. “On October 2005, I underwent a radical mastectomy of my right breast and had to undergo chemotherapy. Little would I know that in just three years I would be diagnosed with a type of gland cancer and would undergo yet another surgery with a risk of facial nerve paralysis that I would survive. Through my experiences I learned two things. I attribute my recovery to my faith in God and a positive attitude, and secondly, I advise all women and men to get to know their bodies very well.”
