VERY SPECIAL BOY BORN IN A STABLE

There is a truly festive feel in the air at Blackpool Zoo after the birth of a very special boy in one of its stables. The male Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra foal, which is yet to be named, is only the fourth of his kind to be born in the UK for the past decade and he is a hugely significant addition to the European Endangered Species Programme. When senior mammal keeper Sofie Fawzy arrived for work on Monday 26th November she was delighted to find the beautiful little stripy boy up on his feet and feeding from his mother. The UK’s only Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra to be born in the past decade is celebrating his first birthday at Blackpool Zoo tomorrow (Tuesday 28th February). Tebogo was one of only 26 foals to arrive across the entire world in 2011 and he took the number of Hartmann’s Mountain Zebras in captivity in the UK to 14. He was named by specialist keepers that cared for his mother Helene during her pregnancy. Tebogo is a south South African name which means ‘we are thankful’.
