The Orust public water sewage company loses several million SEK annually due to freshwater leakages and further losses when leaked clean water is returned with greywater to be cleaned again. iioote’s platform WebIoT and the solution H2OIoT is a service using data remotely read from pump stations and water meters. A total of about 4000 measuring points will be connected.

Data is continuously analyzed to identify where the water leaks are located geographically. With this information, important and often costly decisions, such as digging up pipes in the ground and repairing leaks, can now be made in a more efficient and planned way.

In addition, a dialogue is being held to include artificial intelligence or so-called machine learning in the future to help predict abnormalities to stop leaks earlier.

Robert Spertina CEO and Head of IoT at iioote AB says “With a solution that breaks new ground a close dialogue is needed with the customer to understand the root cause of the problem and make sure that expectations are fulfilled and with the best possible end result.”

“For many years, Orust has struggled with leakage problems that are costly and bad for the environment. We have therefore invested in the future IoT with low-energy technologies and are in full swing of connecting all our meters and stations around Orust. We saw no need to re-test proven technologies and have already come a long way on our journey in reducing the costs of leaks and contributing to a sustainable society.” says Björn Martinsson, Orust Municipality

The application is made possible by e.g. the leading LPWAN standard LoRaWAN®, which is based on an open standard and is a cost-effective way of communication with battery powered sensors. The advantages are several with very long reach and low energy sensors.

For Orust municipality, the expansion of the wireless network has been made possible by a collaboration between Hvaler municipality in Norway and Orust municipality. A project which is partly financed by the EU program Interreg and the project ESBÖ - smart and sustainable island communities in Orust and Hvaler.
