From June 18 - 20, IMG – Investment and Marketing Corporation Saxony-Anhalt presents the investment location of the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt at the Global Expansion Summit in London. Global Expansion Summit is the leading global event on international expansion and doing business across borders in the era of innovation and technological transformation.
“The quick availability of affordable space, the speed of project completions but also the availability of more and more free capacities in secure computer centres and our closely networked, rapidly growing IT services industry as well as Saxony-Anhalt’s superb location in the middle of Germany and centre of Europe along with the ultra-modern infrastructure are convincing arguments that will impress in London,” says the acting CEO of the Investment and Marketing Corporation Saxony-Anhalt (IMG), Bettina Quäschning confidently.
The attractiveness of Saxony-Anhalt as a location for investment into Germany is showing an appreciable increase amongst British companies. Between the year 2000 and 2016, 14 investments by companies from the United Kingdom received support with their investment projects in Saxony-Anhalt from the community plan to "Improve the regional economic structure" (GRW). The volume of the investments totaled 165 million Euros. As a result of this, around 1,100 new jobs have been created and over 1,100 jobs have been secured. An example for Britisch investors in Saxony-Anhalt is, inter alia, the EKF-Diagnostics GmbH in Barleben.
British companies in Saxony-Anhalt appreciate the perfect location in the middle of Europe and centre of Germany with fast logistical access to the growth markets in Western and Eastern Europe. With more than 11,000 kilometers of modern roads, with around 3,100 kilometers of railway lines, with the second biggest airport for freight in Germany in Halle/Leipzig, and with state-of-the-art inland waterways, Saxony-Anhalt is excellently interlinked. Nevertheless, the government and state want to invest another two billion euro until 2030 to get the European-wide important logistics location fit for the future. As a preferred location for logistics services, Saxony-Anhalt has modern connections and also important logistics interfaces. Locations such as Hamburg are reliant on logistics chains across transport systems in the medium-term to transport the growing intercontinental flows of goods to the European hinterland. Saxony-Anhalt has created an effective basis to strengthen the port’s hinterland function over the last two decades. The most important inland ports along the Mittelland Canal and Elbe offer cheap trimodal connections for the transport of heavy goods and bulk goods. The federal state has plenty of developed areas along the transport routes to absorb the lack of capacity at German sea ports. In addition, a new goods transport axis is being completed in the Elbe corridor on an existing railway line through East Germany in just a few years.

Background: Saxony-Anhalt and Great Britain
In the year 2016, the United Kingdom was the second important export country of Saxony-Anhalt. Goods worth approximately 1,25 billion Euros were exported from Saxony-Anhalt to the United Kingdom. This is equivalent to a 8.43 percent share of Saxony-Anhalt's total exports. The leading groups of goods included bakery products and other cereal preparations as well as aluminum semifinished products. Other products, exported from Saxony-Anhalt to the United Kindgom in large quantities, were plastics and goods made of plastics, chemical precursors, metal products and pharmaceutical products.
Imports from the United Kingdom to Saxony-Anhalt were mainly raw materials, as well as final and semi-finished products. The UK was the second most important supplier of petroleum and gas, as well as paints / varnishes / kits. The main import goods were also pharmaceutical products, scrap with respect to aluminum / alloys, plastics and chemical products. Imports from the United Kingdom to Saxony-Anhalt totaled around 364 million Euros.
