Cultural “federal state days” from 27 to 31 May and sustainable solutions for global food problems: showcasing Saxony-Anhalt
Magdeburg/Milan. Just few days’ time will see the launch of the fair of fairs, “Expo Milano 2015”, whose theme is Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. Presentations at the German Pavilion permanent exhibition, a thematic station of the federal state on Saxony-Anhalt from 1 May to 31 October and a fresh and exciting cultural programme at the “federal state days” at the end of May will showcase Saxony-Anhalt as an innovative and sustainable region in the heart of Germany, rich in culture and with much to see and experience. Visitors can discover a cross-section of this diverse state, as an attractive place for business, research and tourism.
In line with the Expo motto, Saxony-Anhalt will be presenting four projects as part of the permanent exhibition at the German Pavilion. These show the federal state as a centre of innovation in the field of plant research and introduce sustainable solutions made in Saxony-Anhalt that could help to solve tomorrow’s food problems. The IPK Gatersleben gene bank, crop cultivation at the Julius-Kühn Institute, the MOBICOS project at Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Magdeburg and the WWF nature conservation project “Mittlere Elbe” (Middle Elbe) are just some of the pioneering approaches coming out of Saxony-Anhalt, and will be part of the exhibition. They is a unique demonstration of how bringing together the food industry with agriculture, environmental protection and modern high-tech research can produce intelligent, pioneering and sustainable benefits for managing nature as the source of our food.
The cultural highlight in the Saxony-Anhalt’s activities will be the “federal state days” from 27 to 31 May. Saxony-Anhalt will be demonstrating the cultural diversity of the region with a wide programme of events. From poetry slammer to young jazz talent; from electro lyrics to a drum circle for all, the state will be taking a journey through its cultural landscape and creating tangible synergies between music, literature, art and film. Artists include the Youth Jazz Orchestra, the Friedrich-Bödecker-Kreis reading association and the State Music Academy of Saxony-Anhalt (Musikakademie Sachsen-Anhalt). Presentations by the IMPULS-Festival of New Music, the Moritzburg Foundation art gallery and the state exhibition for the 500th birthday of Lucas Cranach the Younger give a taster of Saxony-Anhalt’s vibrant musical and cultural landscape.

Background: food and agriculture in Saxony-Anhalt
Saxony-Anhalt is an ideal business location for the agricultural and food industries. With a workforce of ca. 22,500 and a turnover of 7.7 billion euros in 2014, the food industry is the largest manufacturing industry in the state in terms of volume and employees. Expo 2015 on Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life is running in Milan, Italy, from 1 May to 31 October of this year. 148 and international organisations will be taking part in Expo Milano 2015. Over the six months of the exhibition, they will be presenting projects on the theme of food, and the sustainable and intelligent management of nature as our source of our food. 20 million visitors are expected at the world fair, with international visitors accounting for 30% of the total. The German Pavilion alone is expecting around 16,500 visitors each day. Over 9 million tickets have already been booked.
