Saxony Anhalt’s pharmaceuticals industry presents new paths at the CPhI Worldwide 2015
The German federal state highlights its innovative economic potential as a pharmaceuticals location
Magdeburg / Madrid. An established pharmaceuticals and vaccines industry, the birthplace of homeopathy, a longstanding location for the chemicals industry, close partnerships between research companies, manufacturing locations and higher education along the entire value added chain, as well as high-performing clusters and networks within the federal state. This mix is what makes Saxony-Anhalt so successful as a location for the pharmaceuticals industry. From 13 – 15 October, the German federal state will be showcasing the strengths of its pharmaceuticals industry at the CPhI Worldwide 2015 exhibition in Madrid, one of the biggest pharmaceuticals exhibitions in the world.
At a joint stand in hall 1, stand H19, in its role as an economic development agency, IMG – the Investment and Marketing Corporation Saxony-Anhalt will be presenting Saxony-Anhalt as a location for life sciences as well as the superb interdisciplinary working conditions and research activities in the federal state. “In Saxony-Anhalt, the pharmaceuticals sector is a successful and growing sector. The opening of a new packaging and logistics centre by Esparma Pharma Services GmbH in Osterweddingen, the companies currently expanding in Saxony-Anhalt such as Oncotec Pharma Produktion GmbH and Pharma Wernigerode GmbH, as well as the consistent growth achieved by sector leaders like Bayer in Bitterfeld and the Sandoz subsidiary Salutas Pharma in Barleben, are convincing proof of this,” explained Dr. Carlhans Uhle, Managing Director of IMG – the Investment and Marketing Corporation Saxony-Anhalt. “At the CPhl in Madrid we want to invite more interested investors to benefit from the superb local factors in Saxony-Anhalt,” continued Uhle.
Along with major pharmaceuticals companies, highly innovative small and medium sized companies have also made a name for themselves at both the national and international levels with specialist solutions and products. These pioneers, who will also be represented at Saxony-Anhalt’s stand at the CPhI, include the company Heppe Medical Chitosan GmbH. This company is a global market leader for high-purity Chitin, pharmaceutical Chitosan and Chitosan derivatives which it has developed with its own know-how. As the only manufacturer of Chitosan in the world, the company offers a range of products from the Chitosan group of substances which consists of over 100 different standard products.
The scientists at the Halle-based company OntoChem GmbH are pioneers in their field throughout Europe. This company has developed a search engine which brings together the attributes of specific substances and is thus driving the development of new active agents and medical drugs. At the global level, the company filters information from scientific publications, books, trade magazines, websites and the package inserts used in medical products. Its customers include DSM, Beiersdorf and Novartis. At the community stand for Saxony-Anhalt at the CPhI, the company will be presenting a software innovation which offers pharmaceuticals companies considerable simplification with their implementation of the European Union’s new REACH directive concerning the road transport of chemicals. For that purpose, the REACH directive requires data regarding the toxicity of substances to be presented in order to assess their toxicity levels towards the human body. The new OntoChem software is able to generate this data automatically and create a report with just a few clicks.
The Weinberg Campus Technology Park is among the top 10 technology parks in Germany and the second biggest Science and Technology Park in the former east of Germany. The Weinberg Campus specialises in biotechnology, biomedicine, medical technology, environmental and processing technology, nanotechnology, as well as information and automation technology. Thanks to its first-rate research infrastructure and strong networks, it is the ideal location for companies to strengthen their competitive position. Background: The pharmaceutical sector in Saxony-Anhalt
About 40 companies with a manufacturing permit for pharmaceuticals shape the diverse life science landscape in Saxony-Anhalt. Around 4,000 employees are active here. Prestigious companies, including the aspirin manufacturer Bayer, but also pharmaceutical companies such as Salutas/Hexal, Serumwerk Bernburg AG, IDT Biologika and Oncotec Pharma Produktion GmbH have been writing their own success stories in Saxony-Anhalt for many years. Between 1999 and 2010, this Saxony-Anhalt-based sector was able to treble its revenues. In 2014 alone, they generated a total turnover of 1.3 billion Euros.
