The German biotechnology location Saxony-Anhalt at BIO 2016
The Investment and Marketing Corporation Saxony-Anhalt (IMG) promotes the German biotechnology and pharmaceuticals location of Saxony-Anhalt at the BIO International 2016 in San Francisco.
Magdeburg/San Francisco. "The life sciences industry is one of the most important growth markets in Saxony-Anhalt. For the development and manufacturing of innovative products in the areas of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical technology, the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt belongs to the established locations in Germany and Europe. With our presentation at booth 1005-03 in the German Pavilion at the BIO International Convention in San Francisco, we are supporting this development as part of our goal to attract foreign investment to the federal state," explains Dr. Carlhans Uhle, Director of the Investment and Marketing Corporation Saxony-Anhalt (IMG).
"The location of Saxony-Anhalt provides the ideal enviroment for companies from the entire range of pharmaceutical, plant-based and industrial biotechnology, as they will find excellent conditions with very specialist development focal points. These include, for example, the Weinberg Campus in Halle, the BioPharmaPark in Dessau, the Central Germany Chemical Triangle, the Biotech Start-Up Centre in Gatersleben and the ZENIT in Magdeburg," highlightes Uhle. "At the BIO International Convention 2016, we will be presenting Saxony-Anhalt as an attractive biotech location for foreign investors that convinces due to its immediately available commercial and laboratory space, rapid administrative and funding decision-making, and its close networking between science and industry."
As the economic development agency for the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, the IMG supports companies with every step of the investment process – from the search for a suitable site, to approvals, to dealings with the public authorities, up to issues regarding financing and funding options. In May of this year, the IMG was presented with the Top Investment Promotion Agency Award 2016 for the second year running as one of the best regional economic development agencies in Europe.
In addition to the IMG, several specialist biotech firms that have made an international name for themselves especially from the areas of protein and active agent research, will also be attending the BIO. These will include leading lights in the sector such as IDT Biologika, a world-leading manufacturer of vaccines and pharmaceuticals, Wacker Biotech GmbH of Halle/Saale, a manufacturer of biopharmaceutical products on the basis of microbial systems, Probiodrug and Scil Proteins GmbH, which has set new standards in the development of biopharmaceutical active agents and the development of protein-based production processes for biotech and pharmaceutical companies.

Background to the BIO International Convention 2016
From 6thto 9thJune, the international biotech community is meeting in San Francisco, California. Over 15,000 entrepreneurs and scientists from the fields of biotechnology and pharmaceuticals will be presenting new possibilities from the wide-ranging life sciences industry as well as applications in the areas of drug research, biopharmaceutical manufacturing, genomics, biofuels, nanotechnology and cell therapy.
Germany is one of the world's leading industrial nations for biotechnology, the biggest manufacturer of biopharmaceuticals in Europe, and second only to the USA as a biotech manufacturer worldwide. In 2013, six billion Euros were earned by the biopharmaceuticals sector in Germany, accounting for 20% of the total German medical drugs market.
Around 50 German companies and institutions will be attending the BIO 2016 in San Francisco, where they will be presenting their ambitious product developments and services.
