Independence Blue Cross President and CEO honored by St. Catherine Labouré Medical Clinic
Dan Hilferty will receive the Commitment to Access to Health Care Award
Philadelphia, PA — November 30, 2012 — Independence Blue Cross (IBC) is proud to announce that its president and CEO Daniel J. Hilferty will be honored tonight at the annual “Say AHH Ball” hosted by the St. Catherine Labouré Medical Clinic where he will receive the G. Fred DiBona Jr. Commitment to Access to Health Care Award. The award is named in honor of the late DiBona, the former long-time president and CEO of IBC, because of his strong commitment to providing access to quality health care for everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.
Independence Blue Cross has provided nearly $18 million in financial support for St. Catherine’s and 38 other regional clinics since 2004. The Independence Blue Cross Foundation, launched last October, has continued the mission to help care for the region’s most vulnerable through its Blue Safety Net program. Hilferty, who became president and CEO of IBC in 2010, led the effort to establish the IBC Foundation and ensure that clinics for the uninsured and underinsured continued to receive support.
“At IBC, we strongly believe in the value of community health clinics. The care and service they provide are essential to building and maintaining a thriving and healthy community,” said Hilferty. “We’ve been inspired by St. Catherine’s since day one, and have supported this clinic for many years to help them grow to serve an increasing number of patients. Our belief in St. Catherine’s makes this recognition so special for me and I am honored to receive this award.”
“Throughout his career, Mr. Hilferty has shown immense dedication to providing access to quality health care for those least likely to have access to it,” said Sheila Davis, D.O., co-founder and executive medical director of St. Catherine’s. “In addition to providing funds for operating expenses, the IBC Foundation now provides grants for technology upgrades as well.”
The “Say AHH Ball” — the AHH stands for “Access to Healthcare and Hope” — will be held tonight at the Philadelphia Cricket Club and will be hosted by Philadelphia TV newsman Lou Tilley, who will serve as master of ceremonies.

About St. Catherine Labouré Medical Clinic
Founded in 1999, St. Catherine’s provides health care for uninsured adults who do not qualify for medical assistance. St. Catherine’s provides services for both acute illnesses and chronic disease management. Clients are 99 percent low-income, 90 percent African American, 95 percent between the ages of 26 and 65, and 60 percent employed. In 2011, St. Catherine’s provided 3,675 office visits for approximately 750 individual patients.
