Fitness and nutrition tips will be shared

Philadelphia, PA — November 6, 2012Independence Blue Cross, a leader in community wellness, will host a live Twitter chat focused on nutrition and fitness tips to help people manage their diabetes. To participate, follow @IBX and use #DiabetesChat.

On Wednesday, November 7 from noon to 1 p.m., representatives from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and local wellness expert and fitness guru Kimberly Garrison will be online to answer questions. This open forum will allow participants to share information and connect with others who have diabetes or are caring for someone with the disease.

November is American Diabetes Month, an awareness initiative from the ADA designed to focus the nation’s attention on the issues surrounding diabetes and the many people who are affected by the disease. As the region’s presenting sponsor of Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes, Independence Blue Cross has teamed up with the ADA to help educate the community about the disease by hosting this social media forum on Twitter.

Diabetes — a disease that affects nearly 26 million Americans — impacts Pennsylvanians at a rate of 11 percent, which is almost a third higher than the national rate of eight percent. But there is hope. The ADA states that a proper diet, along with exercise, can help manage blood glucose levels.

Individuals can also learn more about small, practical, healthy changes through IBX Healthy Steps, which provides information on:

  • Connecting with other health-minded fans.
  • Tapping into member benefits.
  • Finding a participating registered dietitian.
