Brenda Mitchell - the cycle lawyer
Spokesperson/commentary on Women and Cycling & the Billie Fleming Tribute Ride 2015
Throughout August, women cyclists from across Scotland will be celebrating the life of Billie Fleming in a series of tribute rides that will demonstrate the strength and popularity of cycling with women in this country.
In 1938, Billie, who died in May last year, aged 100, rode 29,603.4 miles – 35 times the distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats – and still holds the women’s world record for the greatest distance cycled in a single year. At the time, Billie wrote that she wanted one million more women cyclists because she saw it as an overwhelming energising experience. Today, that sentiment is truer than ever as cycling is empowering women not simply through its health benefits, but also by giving them the freedom to travel and control over when and where they go.
Brenda Mitchell is a cycling lawyer and a champion of women cyclists. It is her strong belief that if more women took to two wheels cycling would become quickly normalised as it is in other European countries. She is an ambassador for Filles a Velo and leads the Belles on Bikes group in the Borders, an organisation that is growing rapidly across Scotland.
The Billie Fleming Tribute Ride 2015, which recreates Billie’s tour of Scotland from the Borders to the Highlands & Islands, is just one activity where that the Belles are actively demonstrating the joys of cycling and could be a lead in for any current story about the state of cycling in Scotland.
I would like to invite you to include Brenda on your list of contacts for all matters to do with Women and Cycling – as well as cycling in general.
