Children at Bertram Nursery Group’s 20 nurseries in the north east of England are learning through dance, thanks to the appointment of specialist teacher, Jade Seward.

Jade (20), a qualified dance teacher who has danced professionally, is now using movement and music to help the fives and under with their posture, co-ordination and motor skills. By introducing letter shapes and counting into the routines, she is also preparing the ground for school in a way that the children love.

Visiting each nursery once a fortnight and teaching in groups of eight, the focus is on dancing out stories to music that require the children to exercise every part of their bodies. Even in the baby rooms, Jade creates a sensory experience with light, sounds and movement.

Jade’s appointment reflects the pioneering nature of services at the award-winning Bertram Nursery Group, which aim to inspire pre-school education thinking.

Jade, from Worsley, Manchester, loves the job. She said:

“I’ve always loved dancing and to teach pre-school children is just perfect. They have such enthusiasm and you can see how much they progress every time.

“There’s so much children at this age can learn through dancing. There is the co-ordination and the love of movement, but there’s also an element of discipline, self-control and spatial awareness. By introducing other skills such as listening to stories, making the shapes of letters and counting, we are also introducing important lessons for their school careers.”

She added:

“The parents get involved too and practice the dances with their children. We’re even looking at creating videos so that the good work at the nursery can be extended at home.”

Cary Rankin, MD for Bertram Nursery Group, England added:

“People, such as Jade, with the enthusiasm and passion for pre-school education are at the heart of what we do at Bertram. Dance is universally enjoyed and we are delighted that we can offer this is such a structured and positive way at our nurseries.”
