As ESPC celebrates four years helping to support Libby Clegg, the Paralympian who won T12 100 metre gold at the 2014 commonwealth games in Glasgow, has announced she is working with a new coach to boost her chances at this year’s World Championships in Doha.

Joe McDonnel, a Paralympic sprints coach based in Loughborough, is working with Libby to improve her times over 100 metres and 200 metres. Libby will continue to run with her guide Mikail Huggins.

Since lending their support to Libby in 2011, ESPC is continuing its sponsorship for the 100m T12 sprinter who discovered her passion for running in Edinburgh while attending the Royal Blind School, before moving to a training base in Loughborough to develop her career in the sport.

Over the next two seasons ESPC will help Libby fulfil her dream of running in the World Championships in Doha and the 2016 Rio Olympics.

ESPC sponsorship contributes to Libby’s travel to international competitions, as well as her nutrition, training, and living expenses.

Since winning Gold in the 100m T12 Commonwealth event last summer, Libby has noticed she’s become a bit of household name, with staff at Scottish airports frequently stopping her for snaps whenever she passes through on her way to competitions.

She says:

“I’m delighted to be working with Joe McDonnel, who has a real track record of developing athletes especially over my distances”

“Edinburgh will always be the place where I was developed as an athlete and it’s always a home from home for me. I trained under Bob Moxley at the Edinburgh Athletics Club and I own a flat in Edinburgh which I bought through ESPC. My two brothers both live and train here as fellow athletes.

“ESPC’s support has been fantastic over the past four years. Their sponsorship contributes towards my travel and living expenses, allowing me to focus on improving my track time and keeping fit. I’m looking forward to coming up to see them again soon to see their new showroom which has just opened.

“I’m racing quite a lot in 2015 in the run up to Doha in October. My next race is in Barcelona on 14 May which will be a great opportunity to improve my times across both 100m and 200m.”

The connection between ESPC and Libby first started when Libby did her work experience at the ESPC showroom on George Street in her final year at school.

Paul Hilton, CEO of ESPC added:

“ESPC is delighted to be celebrating four successful years working with Libby. Throughout the relationship she has achieved a great deal of success and continues to set a fine example of the determination and effort needed to achieve.

“Everyone at ESPC wishes Libby the best of luck in the season ahead and we look forward to continuing our support.”
