Finds a project management survey conducted by InLoox and German Ivy League Institute LMU Munich.

San Francisco, January 28, 2015 – What are the most important factors for businesses when it comes to choosing a project management software? Why do some projects succeed without the support of a software tool? A research project, conducted by German Ivy League institute Ludwig Maximilian University Munich and software engineer InLoox, focuses on these questions.

The survey was conducted among 135 project managers, executives and professionals with a strong background in project work. They mainly work in project heavy industries like information and communication technology, service sector and manufacturing. The vast majority of them (82 percent) are already using project management software and 69 percent of the participants were involved in the initial buying process or switching the software solution. The interviewees work with companies of any size – the sample includes representatives from small start-ups of less than 10 employees to international corporations with more than 1,000 employees. Additionally to the online questionnaire, the study included qualitative interviews with 12 project management experts.

According to the study participants, the decisive factors in choosing a project management software are the software’s user-friendliness, workflow management features and interface options to external databases and programs from other providers.

The online survey results were underpinned by the expert interviews: “Is the user interface easily understandable? Is the navigation intuitive or do I need extensive upfront training?”, as one of the experts summarized the usability requirements of project management software.

Just under 20 percent of the survey participants do not use any project management supporting software. Of those, however, more than 50 percent are currently planning to purchase a special PM software or at least would want to work with such a tool. The remaining of those participants use standard tools like Microsoft Excel to support them in smaller and less complex projects.

“93 percent of the respondents believe that successful project management is the competitive edge of the future. Our regular customer surveys show that projects really are a deeply integrated in their daily work”, says Andreas Tremel, CEO at InLoox. “This means that an increasing number of people work on projects without being full-time project managers. They simply don’t have the time to learn the ropes of complicated planning tools for pros. The requirements for project management tools are changing according to this trend. What we need are easy-to-use software solutions that are largely self-explanatory.”
