Nashville-based interior designer gets rare opportunity to work on project in Florida hometown

NASHVILLE, Tenn., August 29, 2011 – Pam Faulkner, senior designer at Inner Design Studio of Nashville, Tenn., works on about 25 health care interior design projects throughout the country each year. But a recent project brought her home to Clewiston, Fla. to coordinate the interior design at the hospital where she was born—Hendry Regional Medical Center (HRMC).

Working with Inner Design Studio for 16 years, Faulkner has seen many projects come across her desk, but none have brought her this close to home. She was glad that HRMC selected Inner Design to handle the project and thrilled when the firm asked her to be the lead designer.

“I know how much Hendry means to the Clewiston community and I am grateful for the opportunity to work on a facility that means just as much to me,” said Faulkner. “Not only was I born at Hendry, but my grandmother Anne Mae Jones served as administrator of the hospital for about 8 years and many family friends still work there. I’m so proud of the community’s efforts to complete this much-needed addition.”

The Clewiston community’s fundraising efforts over the last decade allowed HRMC to fully fund the addition of a full-service emergency department with two trauma rooms and private exam rooms, admissions and outpatient waiting areas and a cutting edge imaging center to the existing hospital. Before this addition, the hospital could not provide emergency medical services to its patients, which meant sending them more than an hour away for treatment at the nearest full-service hospital.

“As a Clewiston native, I understood the dire need for Hendry to expand and update. It’s a great relief to the residents knowing that they have better access to quality emergency medical care,” said Faulkner. “Giving the community a facility that they could be proud of—and that my grandmother would be proud of—was my top priority. I wanted to make sure I gave it my absolute best efforts.”

And that’s just what Faulkner and the Inner Design team set out to do.

The design concept was to create a soothing environment within a khaki, light blue and sage green color scheme. Faulkner maximized cost efficiency throughout the facility by highlighting architectural details, such as pitched ceilings and curved walls, with paint accents and creating interesting floor patterns with various color tiles.

The main lobby admission area features a curved, multi-tonal wood reception desk offset by a wall of glass blocks. The space captures an abundance of natural light with floor-to-ceiling windows that also emphasize the reception desk’s curved soffits.

Off the lobby corridor, Faulkner also created a wall to recognize community donors and highlight the hospital’s history. She used old photos to chronicle the changes HRMC has made to its facility since it was established in 1929. Faulkner said that creating the wall was her favorite part of the project “since it shows the progress that Clewiston and Hendry have made over the years.”

“This facility is true reflection of Clewiston’s commitment to enriching the community and I was truly honored to be a part of their efforts to bring quality care to its citizens,” said Faulkner.
